BACNE – Back Acne is caused by the triggering of an inflammatory response due to the accumulation of dead skin cells and oil within the pores in the skin, combined with an overgrowth of a common skin bacteria, C. acnes,
Here are some common tips to prevent and treat back acne.

1 Stop medications including male hormones and lithium.

2 Stop activities that cause friction and increased sweating on the back such as heavy backpacks, back braces, shoulder pads etc. – Often called “Acne Mechanica”. Avoid sitting for long periods with your back rubbing the back of the chair.

3 Avoid using oily skin care products. Check the labels of the products and look for “Non-Comedogenic” mentioned on it , it means will not clog pores.

4 Wear clean loose cotton clothes as sweat, oil and dirt may further contribute to development of bacne.

5 Shower immediately after a workout, or use an oil-free cleansing wipe to get rid of as much sweat from your body as possible, and change your clothes.

5 For mild acne or maintenance use over-the-counter acne creams and gels containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid, it prevents new blemishes from popping up and treats existing ones. They unclog the pores and kill the bacteria.

6 Be gentle when cleansing the skin. Avoid astringents, and abrasive scrubs that can make your acne worse. Scrubs, loofas, and exfoliators can damage the skin and make body acne worse.

7 Like face acne do not Squeeze or Pick Back Acne. It will lead to hyperpigmentation and scarring.

8- It is a myth that sun improves acne. So avoid Excessive Sun Exposure. Please read previous post.

9 Wash and change the bedsheets once or twice a week

10 Use a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo if you suffer from dandruff as it can give rise to acne like lesions

Book an appointment with your doctor to discuss the back acne. Your doctor may prescribe creams, antibiotics, oral acne medication, or may suggest laser therapy, chemical peels, or steroid injections, depending on the severity of back acne.
